THE THIRD SUNDAY OF ADVENT - 14th December 2025
Dear brothers and sisters in Christ,
As we enter the third week of the season of Advent, also known as Gaudete Sunday, the liturgy invites us to pause in joyful anticipation of the coming of the Lord. The colours glow rose on the Advent wreath, a sign that the Church already tastes the sweetness of the Lord’s nearness, even as we continue our faithful preparation.
Our readings this Sunday speak to us of hope, repentance, and the fulfillment of God’s promises. The Prophet Isaiah proclaims comfort to Zion and announces a future of salvation, while Saint Paul exhorts the Corinthians, and us, to live as people of light, keeping our lamps burning in hopeful expectation. The Gospel scene of John the Baptist calling us to repentance anchors our readiness for the one who is to come, the One who is mightier than we can possibly imagine, the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world.
Today’s theme centres on preparing the way of the Lord, making straight the paths of our hearts, and rejoicing in the imminent arrival of our Saviour. Advent is a season of both penitential longing and radiant hope, a tension which is resolved in our Lord Jesus Christ, who breaks into our world to bring salvation, peace, and new life.
So as we gather for the celebration of the Holy Eucharist, let us open ourselves to grace: may the Spirit empower us to repentance where needed, may we extend mercy to others, and may our lives be a living witness to the joy and hope that Christ brings. Let us also remember those who are suffering, and lift them up in prayer, trusting in the mercy and providence of our loving God.
May the blessing and protection of Our Lady, the Queen of Peace, be with us, and may St. Joseph, guardian of the Holy Family, guide our steps along the way of the Lord.
Grace and peace to you from our Lord Jesus Christ.
With blessings on you and your families,
Father Victor Bullock
